Divine Care Ministries’ Legacy in Education

Former DCM student Eron and her husband William with Phoebe and Peter Sozi.

A trip to Uganda is always filled with memorable events. My recent trip was no exception. Although the rainy season extended several weeks longer than usual and the roads had suffered a lot, I was still able to spend time in ways that furthered relationships and created more pleasant memories for me. At the beginning of this trip we traveled in the area around Kampala to visit some of our alumni who were in the ministry from the earliest days. Two of the alumni were young ladies whom I have known for most of their lives, Eron and Debbie. They have each married men who love them and also love God. Also, they each have started primary schools. Eron’s school is located in the neighborhood where she lives. The school has been built block by block as funds have become available. Her husband William has been very supportive in this project. Although he works in the palace of the Kabaka (King) of Buganda, he also spends much time helping at the school. Eron’s vision is to try to make primary education affordable to everyone so she has kept the costs low. The day I was there, Joshua, one of our teachers at Divine Grace, was there helping with the students song and skit performances to celebrate the end of the school year. Debbie’s school is in a rented building in a neighborhood south of Kampala. This is a nice structure and she has almost forty students. Her curriculum is quite different. This is considered an international school and uses studies similar to those used in homeschooling in America. The studies progress at the individual student’s pace but the teacher is very attentive and available when the student raises a flag showing he/she needs assistance. Both schools emphasize the spiritual development of the children in the same manner that the Divine Care schools do. In fact, it seemed to me that evidence of Phoebe’s influence was very apparent in both schools. It is a great reward to all of us who sponsor Divine Care to see the vision continuing in the lives of those we have sponsored.
